5 signs your car battery won't survive winter
Watch for five signs: a slower crank in the morning, a battery older than three years, a recent jump start, dim lights or dash warnings, and corrosion on the terminals. Any one of these means it's worth a free test in March or April, before the first cold mornings arrive.
Cape Town winters aren't freezing, but cold, damp mornings are when a weak battery finally gives up. A battery that struggled through summer often fails on the first cold week. These are the signs to watch for.
1. A slow crank in the morning
If the engine turns over more slowly than it used to, especially first thing in the morning, the battery is losing strength.
2. It's more than three years old
Age is the best single warning sign. After three years, have it tested before winter, even if it seems fine.
3. You've needed a jump start
One jump start can be a light left on. Two is a pattern. Either the battery is weak or something is draining it.
4. Dim lights or warning messages
Headlights that dim at idle, a flickering dash or a battery warning light all point to a battery or charging problem.
5. Corrosion on the terminals
White or green crust on the battery terminals makes a poor connection and can hide a battery that's leaking or overcharging.
What to do
Drive in for a free battery and alternator test. It takes a few minutes and tells you whether your battery will make it through winter. If it won't, standard fitment is free and usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.
