How long does a car battery last in Cape Town?
Most car batteries in Cape Town last about 3 to 5 years. Summer heat under the bonnet, lots of short trips, cars that stand for weeks and modern electronics all shorten that. Once your battery is three years old, have it tested before winter. The test is free and takes a few minutes.
Most car batteries in Cape Town last about 3 to 5 years. Some go sooner and some go longer, depending on how you drive, the heat under your bonnet and how many electronics your car runs.
What wears a battery out
- Summer heat. High temperatures under the bonnet speed up wear inside the battery. The damage often shows up later, on the first cold mornings of winter.
- Short trips. Starting the car takes a lot of power. If most of your trips are short, the alternator never gets the chance to fully recharge the battery.
- Cars standing for long periods. Alarms, trackers and computers draw a little power all the time. A car parked for two or three weeks can come back to a flat battery.
- Lots of electronics. Start-stop systems, big screens, dash cams and phone chargers all add load.
- A faulty alternator. Under- or over-charging kills batteries early. That's why we test the charging system, not just the battery.
Signs your battery is on its way out
- The engine cranks slower than usual, especially in the morning.
- Lights dim when you start the car or at idle.
- A battery warning light or "low battery" message on the dash.
- You've needed a jump start recently.
- Your battery is more than three years old.
